Recovery Awareness Month

Addiction, Compulsion, or Bad Habit?

Not every problem behavior is an addiction. Some are habits developed over time as coping mechanisms, out of comfort or convenience, or as manifestations of undesirable character traits. But…

where is the line between a bad habit and addiction, and how do we stay on the right side of that line?

During September, Recovery Awareness Month, Manhattan Marriage and Family Therapy will bring you the information and the tools to help you change your bad habits and nip the prospect of facing a full-blown addiction in the bud.

Tools For Those in Early Recovery

If you are an addict in early recovery, be sure to check back during September for great recovery resources and tools, including printable pocket cards  that can come in handy when the craving strikes.

Family Healing Focus

Addiction hurts everyone in the family, not just the addict. Whether or not the addiction is arrested, the healing for everyone can begin at any time. Be on the lookout for a blog on the subject and a handy pocket card.
Here's what you can look forward to:

Free online habit-stopping course.

Whether it’s drinking or eating too much, staying up late binge-watching Netflix, or checking Facebook every 10 minutes, there comes a point when you realize that a behavior does not serve you, yet you find it difficult to stop.
Not Yet an Addiction: Stopping a Bad Habit Before You Can’t.

Join us for a month-long journey toward a happier, addiction-free life. Rooted in the neuroscience of habit formation and recent discoveries about human brain, this completely free 4-week e-mail course, created in partnership with Caron  Foundation, is designed to help you turn things around before it’s too late.

The neuroscience of habits says that we can’t just will ourselves to stop a habit—we literally have to re-wire our brain and replace the reward of the negative behavior with a healthier one.

The course consists of weekly e-mails with exercises and instructions for breaking free of those irksome behaviors that are oh-so-difficult.
