PREMARITAL COUNSELING

Premarital Counseling in NYC and Connecticut

Premarital inventory and counseling gives marrying couples a head start in their relationship-building by facilitating a dialog about hopes, goals and expectations; as well as developing solid communication and conflict resolution skills before problems arise.

Manhattan Marriage and Family Therapy counselors utilize PREPARE/ENRICH, a 6-session premarital counseling program designed to help couples fortify their marriage before it begins, and build a solid foundation to help withstand the natural challenges of transitioning from individuals to a couple.

Topics addressed in premarital counseling can include finances, roles and responsibilities, spirituality or religious life, children, community, continued education, intimacy and sexuality, as well as numerous other lifestyle concerns.

Premarital counseling is to marriage what a defensive driving class is to becoming a new driver.”  -Dr. Amanda Craig, LMFT, Founder and Clinical Director of MMFT

Premarital Counseling for same-sex couples in NYC and Connecticut

Same-sex couples face many of the same challenges as heterosexual couples, but with the added layers of complexity. In addition to having overcome external prejudice and internalized homophobia, same-sex couples often deal with familial resistance or non-acceptance; issues with sense of belonging, personal identity, degrees of “outness”; or more pragmatic concerns such as adoption vs. surrogacy for having children, name change, delineating roles outside of gender-stereotypical paradigm and more.
